The local news ecosystem is in a state of collapse. Minnesota newspapers employ fewer than one-third the number of workers compared to a quarter century ago, according to a report from the Center for Rural Policy and Development. One memorable example: The corporate-owned St. Cloud Times was down to just a single reporter before he left earlier this year. Many of the papers that remain cannot afford a subscription to the Associated Press, let alone a Capitol bureau, which leaves vast swaths of the state almost totally in the dark when it comes to Minnesota politics and policy. That’s where the Reformer comes in. We don’t just allow small news outlets to republish (for free!) our deeply reported politics and policy stories — we encourage it. Minnesota media outlets are increasingly taking us up on the offer.
