Some tech leaders will portray my comments today as anti-Al. As defending the old status quo. As yet another ossified institution lashing out at the innovators who are driving the forward march of progress. And to be fair to our colleagues in Silicon Valley, there is a tradition of legacy incumbents — say a 175-year-old newspaper — complaining about new technologies and the disrupters behind them. So it's worth stating this plainly: The news organization I lead, The New York Times, has a long record of embracing technology to advance the mission of independent journalism. We have a history of respectful partnerships with tech companies to bring that journalism to new readers in new ways. Meeting disruptions with curiosity, openness and adaptability helped us navigate the collapse of our print business and come out stronger on the other side. Today my colleagues are using A.l. technology - responsibly, ethically, and with humans making the decisions - to improve how we report, edit, distribute and monetize our journalism. Holding a powerful new technology at arms length is a recipe for failure.

This is the subtext of the strange and conflicted messaging that we get from the hype men: when they say that you better learn AI or be left behind, they are admitting that a great many people will be left behind. And if you—smart and clever and hardworking person that you are—are somehow able to make it to the other side of the line, you’re supposed to find relief or pride at having done so, and not horror at all the people suffering in your wake. You’re supposed to be as uncaring as the capital that uses you. But getting through this gauntlet is no guarantee of getting through the next one—and there will be a next one, because the plain aim of the technocrats is to immiserate everyone, eventually. From the capitalist perspective, anyone with skills enough to negotiate a comfortable wage is a cost in need of cutting.

Organizing to block datacenter construction is a way for regular people to ensure their objections and preferences are heard; disruptive protest is a form of leverage for people who lack wealth and political connections. In the words of the antitrust expert Zephyr Teachout: “If you want democratic governance of AI, block datacenters. Google’s not coming to any democratic table, not listening to any rules, without people showing force.”

Perhaps the most notorious empty building in the city is the historic Harvard Square Theatre, vacant since 2012.
