A colour photograph in portrait format. It shows a large grey piece of equipment on a canal. This is the Falkirk Wheel which can move canal boats from the lower to the higher canals (and vice-versa). To see it in motion is absolutely great.
A colour photograph in landscape format. It shows a sweep of rocks in a breakwater from the Jetty on the prom at Morecambe. The sea is a delightful blue colour and the sky is a paler blue.
A black and white photograph in landscape format. It shows a two storey brick building with two large arches at ground level and four arched "windows" at the upper level. This is a blast furnace at Blist Hill from 2022.

A black and white photograph in landscape format. It shows a view of a grating over a drain, yes I know how romantic! I like the repetitive metal work and the faint glint and reflection of the water below.
A black and white photograph on landscape format. It shows a flight of outdoor steps with a metal fence and handrail. Crowding in front and behind the steep slope are lots of white wild garlic as it was May 2026. The steps are "The Radical Steps" in Kirkby Lonsdale constructed in the 1820s, an interesting and unconventional flight!

A colour photograph in portrait format. It shows a view of my favourite field on a favourite local walk. Beyond the iron gate is a field of lush grass with sheep and lambs. An almost cloudless sky and a sunny day. Superimposed at the bottom are the details of the walk from my Garmin watch. I was covering 4 miles at a speed of 17 minutes per mile, walking briskly (2019).

A black and white photograph in portrait format. It shows a long range view of quarry office buildings, mostly made of corrugated iron, on the top of the site. In the foreground is what looks like a sheer cliff face, the result of much quarrying for limestone in the area.

Through the arch, of lovely golden stone, you can see a green lawn, an empty window frame, where a massive stained glass window would have been, and a group of visitors. I had a very cheap camera in those days, so the image is not very clear, sorry.

The work by Andrew Baldwin (from 2020) is a tribute to Molly and Ethel Everson who jointly ran the boat yard with their brothers until 1969. Nature has decorated the sculpture with moss and seaweed.

A black and white photograph in portrait format. It shows a woodland of young birch trees in the winter. The bark is black and white and the whole effect is coolness (in the sense of heat not attitude!) I'm a lightweight and am struggling in 32 degree heat, hope that you are all OK.

A black and white photograph in landscape format. It shows a row of trees in a field without leaves as it's March and it's Winter. I liked the way the light showed through at that time of year, in Spring and Summer it will be an impenetrable barrier/windbreak.

Behind him stand two people in warm coats, it was quite a cold day even though it was early May! The re-enactors go to great lengths to create authentic historical costumes, weapons, tents and other activities in a living village environment.

A black and white photograph in portrait format. It shows the centre of a large bloom with tight-packed petals, now opening gently. The artist/singer Seal had a hit with his song "Kiss From a Rose" in 1994. This rose here looks soft to the touch.
A black and white version in square format. Tried to repair the "pink" effect of the old film which is degrading, by converting to black and white. The poicture shows five young women standing by railings at the seaside. Despite the fact it was summer, we all wore coats and thick jumpers!

A colour scan in portrait style. It shows a used postage stamp in circulation from 1881 to 1901 in the UK. The Penny Lilac was produced in large numbers, so is not rare, but I like the representation of Queen Victoria as a younger woman.

A postcard in portrait format. It has a sepia drawing of the frontage of a shop, a Post Office, with bow window. The Post Office is tiny and the service was established in 1712, though this postcard shows the date 1763.
A black and white photograph in landscape format. It shows an arched brick and stone bridge over a canal on a calm day. A canalboat approaches at a slow speed. It is bridge number 111, also known as Williamson's Bridge, and the canal opened in 1835.
A black and white photograph in landscape format. It shows the Silver Jubilee Bridge which crosses the River Mersey between Widnes and Runcorn. The metal bridge was completed in 1961, replacing an older "Transporter Bridge".
