From this month’s Costco Connection magazine, a picture of a Costco gift card (called a Shop Card) and some wadded up brown paper and some plant leaves on a stem along with the following text: Costco Shop Card update In an effort to reduce carbon emissions and plastic use, Costco Shop Cards are now made with recycled paper materials instead of polyviny chloride (PVC). These recyclable cards are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Mix-certified, meaning they're created with content from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials and/or FSC-controlled wood. With this switch, Costco decreased the use of plastic as well as fossil fuel and water used to create the old cards. Those reductions add up to several metric tons of emissions avoided.

Text from article: When Citizens United was decided in 2010, billionaires had spent $18 million on the 2000 presidential election, $13 million in the 2004 cycle and $16 million in 2008. Then came the deluge. In 2012 the total was $231 million, and the figure roughly doubled again in each of the next three election cycles — to $682 million in 2016, $1.2 billion in 2020 and $2.6 billion in 2024. The number of billionaires grew over this time, too, of course, roughly doubling between 2010 and 2024. But their political spending grew by more than 150 times.

Spend even a few hours on social media reading about the contentious issues of the day, and you'll find dozens of people being called Nazis, fascists, authoritar-ians, genocidal, and so on. It's no longer enough to say someone has a different view; we now have to make them a villain. Hillary Clinton can't just be a shrewdly political liberal and feminist that others disagree with; she has to be a baby-killing pedophile mastermind. Donald Trump can't just be a brash, ambitious, populist leader that others disagree with; he has to be a fascist secret Russian agent set on destroying democracy and installing martial law. And it's not just presidential candidates who get the villain treatment; it's also regular people we encounter in person and online.
