The red orange sign says: Forbes Pigment Collection and Gettens Collection of Binders and Varnishes The colorful array you see across the courtyard are the samples that make up the Forbes Pigment Collection and the Gettens Collection of Binders and Varnishes. These collections were started at the turn of the 20th century by Edward Waldo Forbes, second director of the Fogg Art Museum, who believed that scientific information could enhance our understanding of how artworks are made and how they age. These collections are used like reference libraries: we analyze artworks alongside samples of known pigments and binders to identify and authenticate them. Today, the Forbes and Gettens Collections have grown to more than 3,500 specimens. They include ancient samples of Egyptian Blue and Han Purple-the world's oldest synthetic pigments-as well as samples of those invented in the 21st century, such as Vantablack and YInMn blue. The binders include natural and synthetic glues, resins, and oils. Behind you is a case containing samples from the Forbes Pigment Collection, which we change from time to time-feel free to take a closer look!
