The replacement part was installed and is functional, and since it is made of metal, it should not fail again. I would heartily recommend this Etsy seller to anyone with a broken latch on one of these models. He’s come up with a good fix for $27+ shipping.

I’m so relieved this worked because now I can test out the two AF zoom lenses that came in the mail earlier this week.
Hm .. got a few 80s-90s Nikons with dodgy latches ... from their plastic fantastic era, will investigate.
