A timeline of basic discoveries leading to FDA approval of imatinib. The discovery by Nowell and Hungerford in 1960 of the chromosomal translocation characteristic of CML, termed the Philadelphia chromosome, led to subsequent identification of the Bcr and Abl genes at the translocation junction. Next followed the demonstration that this translocation led to production of a fusion protein with constitutive Abl kinase activity. These discoveries ultimately informed the development of imatinib, which received FDA approval in 2001.
