Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria said Toronto hadn’t moved to install the infrastructure required to slow drivers down. “If we want to reduce speeding on whether it’s Parkside or other roads where speeding is a concern, we need to install infrastructure like speed bumps,” he told reporters on Wednesday morning. “If you have a speed bump there, you will not be able to speed, and you will not be able to get at a higher speed.” His office said Toronto had been sent $10 million to make traffic calming changes to its roads from the Road Safety Initiative Fund.

Toronto, ON M5H 2N2 RE: IE17.4 - Parkside Drive Study Final Report Dear Mayor Chow and Members of Council, Cycle Toronto is writing to express our enthusiasm and support for the recommendations put forward to reconfigure Parkside Drive as a Complete Street with bikeways and intersection safety improvements at Lake Shore Boulevard W and the Martin Goodman Trail. We also want to thank the work of community group Safe Parksde for their tireless advocacy. The Parkside Drive Study represents over a decade of community advocacy for improving road safety due to the number of serious road injuries and fatalities that have taken place in the corridor. The last ten years have seen seven traffic collisions that resulted in three fatalities. Despite being along one of Toronto’s busiest parks to the west and an established residential area to the east, Parkside Dr is a dangerous arterial designed to facilitate driving at high speeds. These crashes are not accidents, they are the result of outdated road design. We cannot wait until 2026 for these improvements. Especially in the face of the proposed municipal overreach into municipal affairs outlined in Bill 212, it is important for the City to complete Phase One of the project by 2025. On behalf of our membership and supporter base, I urge you to dedicate the necessary resources to doing the necessary design work for The Parkside Drive Study recommendations to go to tender before Bill 212 is adopted into law. I mean, a whole host of them — Maria Minna, Art Eggleton, Dennis Mills, Sergio Marchi — if there was shit going on in Toronto, the prime minister in Ottawa knew about it, and he knew about it quickly. What does it say about how responsive you think this federal government will be on this issue, if a former Ontario Liberal Minister of Finance can’t get a response to his query from the Minister of the Environment? My fear is that it’s a done deal, and they’re afraid to step on the toes of the prime minister.

A local councillor can have significant influence over developments in their ward. While they’re only one vote on council, they play a lead role in speaking with city staff and residents about proposed projects, and can bring forward any concerns constituents may have during the approval process. Generally, councillors outside the ward where a development is taking place defer to the opinion of the local member.

Continuing Installation of eglintonTOday The Eglinton Crosstown LRT will transform how people travel on Eglinton Avenue. The planned eglintonTOday Complete Street project, which includes new bikeways and changes to car and bus lanes and parking, will be installed when the LRT opens as authorized by Toronto City Council.
