It forms a critical section of the Trekvliettracé, one of The Hague’s sterfietsroutes—which connect the city centre with the region's fastest-growing neighbourhoods. By routing users beneath the busy Mercuriusweg, the project removes the need to wait at a complicated and heavily trafficked crossing.

As the unsung heroes of the Dutch cycling ecosystem, underpasses address missing links that can otherwise undermine an entire route. They allow cyclists to bypass busy roads, railways, waterways or other barriers, while maintaining their momentum rather than stopping and waiting for traffic signals.
