In spite of his friend's warnings, Nippie enters the unoccupied school laboratory and begins fooling around, mixing two test tubes just to "see what happens". The chemicals explode with a "BOOM", and the flash and smoke obscures everything above his comically twisting legs.
Nippie unwisely tries to run to catch a falling football at the big kids' kicking practice, but the ball bounces up and painfully hits him right in the stomach. The football! His gut! It works on so many levels!
Nippie refuses his friend's advice to save up for a higher-quality baseball, saying that he call tell the cheap one is good "by the stitching". On the diamond, he takes a swing at it and the ball flies apart with a pathetic little "PLOP" sound effect.
Nippie looks into the open nozzle of an inactive fire hydrant, despite his pal's warning that men are working on it below. When the supply is switched on again, Nippie is drenched by a bruising torrent of water.
Nippie's mother tells him to set his alarm clock to make it on time to "the excursion tomorrow", but the boy is confident in his own sense of timing. Come the next morning, Nippie stares in surprise at the time on his alarm clock; the last panel shows him standing forlorn at the docks, quite literally missing the boat, as his ship pulls away.
Wartime Sunday strip. Ma Finn tells Mickey that no longer will he have to share his bed with his normally idle Uncle Phil; Phil, feeling a surge of patriotism and wanting to aid the defence effort, has taken a night job as an elevator worker at the ammunition plant. Phil starts off full of his usual blather, saying he would be glad to risk his life for his country -- and then learns his first task is to take down a cart of mortars, two artillery shells, two powder barrels, and a drum of nitroglycerine, all while the workers remark to each other to be very careful. Phil regards his load dourly, then walks down himself via the stairwell. The final panel has him try to get back into his usual spot next to Mickey in bed.
