More Neighbors A2 is incredibly happy to see the comprehensive land use plan be approved by city council. We want to thank everyone for their support - whether you sent emails, made public comment, or cheered others on. Ann Arbor has a vision to provide more housing for more neighbors. What's Going On? This Monday, Ann Arbor City Council will be voting whether to approve the Comprehensive Land Use Plan. If approved, it will guide the city's future inclusive zoning efforts, creating an Ann Arbor that is: More Affordable More Sustainable More Equitable

From the Politico article: "On his first day in office, Mamdani visited a rundown apartment complex owned by a bankrupt corporate landlord to declare, “We will stand up on behalf of the tenants of this city.” Weeks later, Mamdani joined Gov. Kathy Hochul to call for reforms to the state’s environmental laws, contending that building more would slow the growth of rent."
From a NYTimes interview with Zohran Mamdani in June 2025: What’s one issue in politics that you’ve changed your mind about? The role of the private market in housing construction. How so? I clearly recognize now that there is a very important role to be played, and one that city government must facilitate through the increasing of density around mass transit hubs, the ending of the requirement to build parking lots, as well as the need to up-zone neighborhoods that have historically not contributed to affordable housing production — namely, wealthier neighborhoods. I think all these things, in tandem with a muscular role for the public sector. But that is a changing opinion over time that I’ve been in office.
Quote from Governor Gretchen Whitmer's 2026 State of the State address: "Our laws have made it easy to expand suburbs but hard to build walkable downtowns and main streets or do more with your own property. It shouldn't be so hard to build the homes people need in the places where they want to live."
Today’s Planning Commission vote is a major milestone for our city and for the residents who have long advocated for more affordable housing and smarter growth. This land use plan will help create walkable neighborhoods, expand housing options, and strengthen our local economy. More Neighbors A2 has worked alongside community members and city leaders to advance these policies, and we’re grateful to the Planning Commission for listening to residents. We look forward to supporting strong implementation so this vision becomes reality.

Zoning that restricts the quantity and type of housing that can be built is one important cause of housing affordability problems. Over the past century, policymakers have used land use and building regulations to systematically remove low rungs from the housing ladder. Single-family zoning severely limits the areas where more cost-effective multifamily housing can be built. Research shows that fertility is lower in tightly regulated housing markets than in more flexible ones.
