Grew up watching Knight Rider and Transformers. Now I'm building it. 40 ft RV. 50+ Docker containers. Local AI with persistent memory. The machine does 70%. I constitute the 30% that matters. Paranoid by design, not by diagnosis. mpdc.dev

Two Towers ... But no Token (Tolkien) ring to rule them all. Tower on the left is my Dell Optiplex 5050 It looks old and well used, covered in various hacker stickers that look FAR different than the stickers that actually cover it but I don't pay for DALL-E usage so I take what I can get... Anyway, it's got an amber glow coming from the grill which is apparently supposed to symbolize that it's dying or overloaded or something... On the right is the Precision T3600 ... The side cover is off and you can see happy acid green glow spilling out... There are cables connecting the two machines... Apparently AI thought that I transferred data using 3x USB cables from the SFF desktop to the workstation's interior... It doesn't make sense to me either since I'm doing everything over the LAN. I'd say you get what you pay for, but I pay a SHIT ton for Claude and it fucks up ALL the time. I'm actually getting really sick of it. Anyhoo... I can't think of anything else to describe or bitch about so if you're reading (or listening) this, why don't you send me a message telling me that you found one of my Easter eggs? A dark server room photographed straight on. Rack after rack of equipment, and almost every status LED is burning the same shade of green. Dozens of them. Hundreds. A solid, calm wall of green light stretching back into the dark, the kind of view that is supposed to mean everything is fine and you can go back to bed. That is the joke. The whole point of the piece this image fronts is that green is the most dangerous color in the building. Red screams and you go fix it. Green just sits there, steady and reassuring, while a container crash-loops behind its "running" label, while a firewall answers your pings and silently drops every real connection, while a cleanup function that was written correctly and tested thoroughly never actually gets called. The lights are not lying on purpose. They are reporting status, and status is just a claim. Nobody in this photo is checking whether the claim is true. Look closely and the green starts to feel less like health and more like a held breath. Nothing is screaming. That is not the same as nothing being wrong.
A yellow Post-it, curling at one corner, stuck to the beige plastic bezel of an old CRT monitor. Handwritten in fading blue ballpoint, cramped engineer scrawl: sudo kill -HUP $(pgrep opensnitchd). The ink is uneven, the kind of fade that comes from being touched a lot. A small fingerprint smudge near one edge. At the side of the frame the CRT's curved screen glows faintly green, terminal content out of focus. That's the picture. It's a relic. Every sysadmin who has held a job for more than a year has a drawer or a folder or a corner of a desk where the old notes live. Commands that used to matter. IPs that used to point somewhere. Passwords for systems that don't exist anymore. We keep them because the act of having written something down once means it mattered enough to commit to paper, and there's a strange unease in throwing that out even after we can no longer remember why we wrote it. The note in this picture is one of those that earned retirement this year. The command on it works. It has always worked. For most of the time I was using OpenSnitch on this Docker host, that string of characters was the difference between the site being up and the site being silently dead. I typed it enough that I could tap it out without looking. That is what muscle memory looks like in this kind of work. Not the elegant productivity-influencer kind. The kind where your hands know a command because your brain stopped having to participate. The article this picture accompanies is the work that ended that muscle memory. Fifteen lines of bash subscribed to the Docker event stream. A systemd unit. The reflex stopped being needed and then the reflex stopped firing, in that order. The note came off the monitor and into a drawer with the other relics. The drawer will eventually need its audit, but that is a problem for some other Saturday. This is the only photo I am aware of where the punctuation $( carries actual emotional weight. Hi screen-reader people. You're welcome.
So we got some beige wall with 12 almost identical badges hanging. All the normal badges are just white paper in crappy plastic holders connected to a cheap black lanyard. The 11th badge is acid green with some pretty sick neon purple hue / glowing effect to it ... you know because I dig the matte black and acid green and the purple represents the attack / defend red team / blue team mixture I'm going towards. It's a pretty sick metaphor ... and you can look deeper into it I guess if you want to think in a numerical path... 11 is a lucky number and in binary it's 3 which is my lucky number so that's pretty fucking rad that the AI did that without me prompting it to... uhh... yeah so it's like there I am weaseled in with a bunch of big wigs with my punk rock roots blaring for everyone to see. I was straight for years so going back to my roots and doing ANY kind of social engineering was like being 12 years old again... I had a blast and I'm already working on how to get into HackNWA's Holiday in Scambodia... which I have to crash because yeah, with that Dead Kennedy's reference it's like they invited me personally... Fucking DUH!
