Three people are sitting in a small airplane, or should I say riding, because the airplane is cruising through the air at 120 knots true airspeed. Two men are in the foreground: a much better looking young lad on the left wearing a black t-shirt with yellow letters that says SERVE and his much older dad on the right wearing a gray t-shirt accented by a blue towel over his shoulder. The young man on our left is flying the airplane and his girlfriend sits behind him experiencing her first general aviation flight. She is wearing green along with a desire to be the copilot on the return trip (her wish was granted). All three airplane occupants are smiling and wearing aviation headsets.
Looking down from 7500 feet in the sky (“odd pilots fly east”) past the left wing of a white airplane from the late 1970s at the fall colors in the eastern hills of Kentucky. The landscape is tree-filled with blotches of orange, yellow, green, and brown and broken up by lighter colored valleys and dark colored lines of shadow. There is a lake in the distance and the blue sky is above.
We’re in an airplane a couple thousand feet above the ground, looking out the right side across the front of the wing and past engine number three. It’s a big ol’ radial engine from a bygone era. A road intersects the view on the from lower left to upper right; city suburbs are left of the road while more rural land lies to the right. The wing is made of corrugated aluminum because this airplane is 95 years old.
