Es fällt mir selbst schwer, zu sagen, was ein gebildeter Mensch ist. Aber ich will mich nicht drücken, denn dann würde ich etwas preisgeben, woran ich festhalten will. Also los, ich behaupte: Man muss mindestens eine Fremdsprache beherrschen. Fremde Länder bereisen. Man muss Orte der Vergangenheit zu seiner Gegenwart machen: Kirchen, Denkmäler, Museen. Die Bedeutung von Feiertagen kennen, auch religiöser, aller großen Weltreligionen. Man muss die Grundzüge der europäischen Geschichte kennen, angefangen bei der Französischen Revolution, und auch der bedeutsamen Emanzipationsbewegungen – der Frauen, Schwarzen, Indigenen. Grundsätze der Mathematik (Algebra), Physik (Mechanik), Chemie (Periodensystem), Astronomie (Sonnensystem). Natur erkennen: Buche oder Birke? Man muss lesen: Bücher. Ja, ganz, ja, viele. Musik hören oder Filme gucken. Das politische System im eigenen Land erklären können, die Klimakrise, das Artensterben, die Verstrickungen der Weltwirtschaft. Man muss das Geschäftsmodell der Digitalkonzerne verstehen. Das Tagesgeschehen verfolgen. Die Liste ist ein löchriges Gerüst, so löchrig wie mein eigener Bildungsstand in all diesen Gebieten. Ich könnte das Gerüst unendlich in den Himmel bauen, die Fallhöhe würde immer größer. Aber ein solches Gerüst, egal wie wacklig, braucht man aus einem Grund: Es versetzt einen in die Lage, Fragen zu formulieren.
My research over nearly two decades shows that our attention spans are declining, averaging just 47 seconds on any screen. This is alarming. But it does not mean we are doomed to live unfocused lives. We are experiencing a fundamental shift in how we think, how we work, how we focus, and how we achieve fulfillment. We can all feel it —in our burnout, Zoom fatigue, endless notifications, and our inability to maintain our attention. Technology has been designed with the intent to augment our capabilities and help us produce more, but we are also distracted and exhausted in our everyday use with it. It might feel like we are losing our ability to focus entirely, but there is some good news. Our ability to focus isn't lost, the way we focus is just changing. Based on decades of original research in what I call "living laboratories", where I study technology use in people's real world environments, this book not only presents the science of exactly how short our attention spans have become, how much we're interrupted and how much stress that causes us, but also how we can gain control of our attention and achieve wellbeing.
