See the Solar Cars on the Open Road Select your state below for information on when to see the solar cars. Please Note: The below times are estimates. Weather and traffic can slow solar cars. Visit the live tracker to see solar car locations real-time during the event. Solar cars will roughly follow the Great River Road on their journey through Minnesota. Starting in Minneapolis and heading south along the river before crossing to Wisconsin near La Crosse. Minneapolis The Electrek American Solar Challenge 2026 starts in Minneapolis! See them up close at display day on July 24th or attend the start line on Saturday July 25th at 9am! Solar cars depart at 9am, one vehicle every minute. You can see them on the road on the U of M Campus and East River Parkway. Solar cars will be on the roads in Minneapolis from 9am to about 9:30am on July 25th. St. Paul Solar cars will pass through St. Paul on East River Parkway, Montreal Ave, Shepard Rd / Great River Road, and US-10. Solar cars will still be bunched together from the start line, expect to see them in St. Paul on July 25th from about 9:05am to 10am. Cottage Grove Solar cars will pass through Cottage Grove on US-10. They will start to spread out a bit more. Expect to see them from 9:45am to 10:30am on July 25th. Hastings Solar cars will pass through Hastings on US-61 and MN-316. Expect to see them from 10am to 11am on July 25th. Red Wing Solar cars will pass through Red Wing on US-61. Expect to see them from 10:30am to 11:45am on July 25th. Frontenac Solar cars will pass through Frontenac on US-61. Expect to see them from 10:45am to 12pm on July 25th. Lake City Solar cars will pass through Lake City on US-61, they will be much further spread apart by this point. Expect to see them from 10:45am to 12:30pm on July 25th. Wabasha Solar cars will pass through Wabasha on US-61. Expect to see them from 11am to 1pm on July 25th.
Electrek American Solar Challenge 2026 1550+ miles from Minneapolis, MN to Amarillo, TX This July solar cars take on the Great River Road and Historic Route 66 at the Electrek American Solar Challenge. Over 40 teams from the United States, Canada, Belgium, and The Netherlands are registered to compete. The events start with scrutineering and the Electrek Formula Sun Grand Prix track qualifier at Brainerd International Raceway on July 21-23. Solar cars will then head to Minneapolis for a display day at the University of Minnesota. On July 25th solar cars start the American Solar Challenge at the University of Minnesota. They will arrive at the Finish Line at Arts in the Sunset in Amarillo, TX on August 1st.
