A programming system with three columns containing various symbols, each of which is a term of the rewriting system: on the right, a large grid containing two clusters of symbols (one of three hearts and three ducks, labelled 1, and one of a translucent duck and a soccer ball, labelled 2). In the middle, a toolbox of four symbols (heart, duck, ball, eye). On the left, rewriting rules: a duck and heart produce a soccer ball; a ball and duck produce an eye and ball; a ball produces two ducks. One of the hearts in the grid is a button, which is clicked on and turns into a plain heart, starting the application of rewriting rules. Each time a duck is produced, it is added to group 2. Group 1 settles with just the heart button returning as a button, and group 2 ultimately adds many eyes. This version of the system has an evident bug where the ghost duck is being treated as present by the eye-producing rule, causing an infinite loop.
