You can't get much more wholesome than that. Much as I want the affirmative, gay positive children's books in the Alyson Wonderland series to be available, I don't think we can protect them by not writing about adult sexuality in all its baffling diversity. The homophobes do not stop hating us when we go mainstream. Even if every single gay man and lesbian in America was in a long-term, monogamous, committed relationship; had eighteen children; never read anything racier than the Bible Digest and Pork Belly Futures Quarterly; voted Republican; and was enlisted in the army, they would still want to push us into the ocean. The politics of appeasement simply doesn't work. Books like this one in fact make the rest of gay literature safer because they push the edges and enlarge the territory of what can be said, thought about, and done. Granted, this is a bad time to be a father figure. The benevolent, all-knowing patrefamilias of the 1950s have been replaced in the media by brutal, uncaring monsters who batter their wives and sexually abuse their children. Leave It to Beaver has been reduced to ashes by The Burning Bed. The word "daddy" in the title of a television program or movie used to be associated with comedy or a heartwarming morality tale. Now it has an ominous ring. The pomo viewer is notified that he or she is about to witness terrible, shocking things (which have sadly lost their power to surprise or shock anybody because of media overexposure). The word "father" has become virtually synonymous with "sex offender."

Text post: I stopped talking about my health and disability as much publicly on a personal level honestly from how traumatizing the pandemic has been for me and disabled friends felt extra vulnerable and raw and lost a lot of people and have had a lot of community pass away from more health complications/(physical and mental/ losing healthcare/ people unable to manage new disability's ) It's been a lot harder and traumatizing reviving care as a disabled person who's frequently in need of care and being in medical settings (although people developing pots/mcas and chronic illness post covid there's been a lot more awareness now in these settings) Asking for help or talking about disability brought me a lot of grief vs community/connection I felt in the past seeing like how normalized euthanasia has become as a topic in chronic illness groups (I've been in for years and seen a lot change in,) with no talk of walking people off ledges just people posting what resources and legalities are avalible for it in what states) I'm really scared of myself and others, losing more bodily autonomy (as a sick trans person) in the us rn and how normalized it feels to experience sorrow instead of like joy I felt connecting with people because of disability But I think talking about it more publicly again is healing some of this, especially since my art always is and will be centered around that part of my identity and are conversations that I want to have on larger scales it makes my body feel less like an enemy and helps my friends understand me and others a little better And helps me practice not masking asking for help when I need it and I feel like especially with collective mourning and loss of autonomy that a lot of us are facing rn we all could learn to ask for help more, and have more space for others who need help and shouldn't be looking away from our neighbors and people around us
