Enhanced geothermal systems access areas not suitable for conventional geothermal systems by increasing the permeability of hot rock. Water is pumped from a surface station to a hot reservoir, where it is heated. The hot water is then extracted to the surface, where it can be used for heating and/or converted into electricity. Electricity is often generated through steam turbines or in binary cycle power plants. Conventional geothermal systems also extract hot water and steam, but rely on natural reservoirs and tend to be shallower.
Solar-driven interfacial evaporation technologies can use solar energy to treat wastewater and produce clean water, food, energy, minerals and chemical resources. These technologies can be used in rural and remote communities that lack access to water or energy infrastructure. Interfacial solar evaporation technologies include floating solar stills, which produce fresh water from seawater, and materials that are integrated into water-treatment plants. They can also be designed to produce fresh water for agriculture on land and on the ocean: the Farming On Ocean via Desalination (FOOD) system. Resources can be recovered from water by using interfacial solar evaporation to extract metals, such as lithium, or in combination with catalytic systems to produce hydrogen gas from water. Emerging designs integrate interfacial solar evaporation with renewable energy technologies like photovoltaic panels and wind turbines, enabling the simultaneous generation of electricity and other resources.
Grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) include dynamic line rating, dynamic transformer rating, power flow control, topology optimization, advanced conductor technology, energy storage system and demand response. These GETs can be integrated individually or as groups into energy systems to reduce congestion and increase security. Data collection, management and processing provide feedback and control of GETs.
Battery recycling pretreatment processes in industry scales are based on shredding, whereas laboratory scale processes focus on disassembly.
