These amendments are part of a bad budget deal whose consequences the public has still not seen. Will state leaders have the money to stabilize North Carolina’s child-care system? To provide meaningful pay raises not only for teachers but for all state employees and retirees? To protect the health care, food assistance, and other supports that were cut by Congress and President Trump? North Carolinians deserve clear answers.

In debate, Senate proponents play down the fiscal problems that this agenda will create, but North Carolinians know what more than a decade of tax cuts has meant in practice: underfunded public schools, child care closures, backlogs of infrastructure projects to bring clean water and broadband to communities, and no long-term planning for disaster recovery, resiliency, and the new costs from the federal government. We trust voters to see through the gimmicks of this bad budget deal.

Instead, this budget deal, hatched behind closed doors, reflects an increasingly rigid ideology and a pattern of intentional neglect — underfunding public needs, giving tax breaks to the wealthy while advancing constitutional changes that would lock future generations into fewer choices and fewer tools to solve problems and strengthen our state. We have choices right now. North Carolina can pursue a well-being budget that invests in the things people and our economy need to thrive — strong schools, affordable health care, child care, housing, and resilient communities — instead of hamstringing our state into policies that limit our future.
