ARMED FORCES DAY Yesterday, a group of Green Party councillors attended Armed Forces Day as a mark of our respect for the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces. It is a source of national shame that many veterans return from careers spent selflessly serving their country only to find themselves on the front line of ongoing cuts to public services. Our government must do far more to ensure that veterans - and all public servants - are protected from poverty, insecurity, and destitution. Days like yesterday remind us of the important role our armed forces played in defeating fascism and defending the liberties we enjoy today.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Councillor Colin Ferguson, said: "Voters in Newcastle have totally changed the political set-up at the Civic Centre. Our priority has been to ensure the Council is stable, working cross-party, and delivering the change the people of Newcastle want to see. It's clear we need to work together to implement a forward looking set of policies that works for every resident of the city, and we will shortly announce policy objectives for the year ahead. I look forward to working with the Green group and others across the whole chamber to deliver meaningful change quickly, which people can see in their communities."

Councillor Nick Hartley, Leader of the Green Group, and Councillor Colin Ferguson, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, have reached an agreement for Newcastle City Council's new leadership arrangement following the 7th May elections.
Newcastle Green Party Councillors condemn Tommy Robinson's "Unite The Kingdom" March. The rally labelling itself as 'Unite the Kingdom' demonstrated no such unity. What we saw on Saturday was blatant Islamophobia, misogyny, and violence. We are a diverse country, made up of millions of brilliant people forged from long lines of migration. Yet, under the guise of 'uniting the kingdom', we witnessed unchallenged Islamophobia. Three non-Muslim women in niqabs shed layers of clothing in an attempt to make a mockery of Muslim women. A cellist performed with bacon draped over his shoulders. One speaker at the rally, Kellie-Jay Keen-Minshull, said: "It is absolutely vital, if we want to save this country, we have to remove Islam from every single place of authority.” The BBC, Sky, Keir Starmer, and Nigel Farage have all failed to acknowledge and actively oppose a huge upsurge in violence against our Muslim population. This kind of blatant racism and Islamophobia cannot and must not be normalised into our communities. It must be challenged both by the national government and the media. We call upon world leaders, national government, MPs and local councillors to condemn ALL forms of racism including anti-Muslim hate. We are fighting not against fellow citizens like our Muslim brothers and sisters, but against the elites - against a system that endlessly exploits vulnerable people and communities to feed the wealthy. Our fight is alongside the oppressed, not against them!

Newcastle Green Party withdraws endorsement of two candidates Newcastle Green Party has withdrawn its endorsement of Philip Brookes (Manor Park)and Mohammed Suleman (Arthur’s Hill) as candidates in the upcoming election while they are subject to an ongoing national Green Party disciplinary process.
Newcastle Green Party has reported campaign material distributed by the Labour Party in Heaton to Northumbria Police for a potential electoral offence. This report was made at 10.30am today, Tuesday 5th May. The material in question falsely attributed an offensive quotation to a Green candidate. This campaign material is dishonest and an insult to voters in Heaton. It also inflames tensions within our community. We are disappointed by these dirty tactics. We are proud to be leading a positive campaign in Heaton and across Newcastle - from advocating for warmer, cheaper housing to preparing monthly community meetings - and will continue to do so.
Newcastle Green Party are appalled by the racist material written by Tina Ion, one of the Green Party candidates for Blakelaw and Cowgate. This case was referred to the Green Party's disciplinary process as soon as we became aware of the material. Furthermore, Newcastle Green Party has withdrawn support for the candidate in the upcoming election. An urgent review of our vetting process is taking place to ensure all of our candidates reflect our views as an anti-racist party. We sincerely apologise for the distress this has caused, in particular, to the Jewish community who are already experiencing a shocking rise in antisemitism and targeted attacks. Antisemitism and hate should have no place in our party or society.

Too many of our homes are cold, damp and overcrowded. This is political failure.
