The Leader of the Opposition has long been clear about the importance of protecting womenā€™s rights and maintaining appropriate single-sex spaces, and I share that view. I believe the Supreme Courtā€™s judgment has provided long-needed legal clarity, and that the EHRC Code of Practice is a necessary step in ensuring that organisations can apply the law properly and consistently. At the same time, transgender people continue to have strong protections under equality law and should always be treated with dignity and respect. Finally, thank you for highlighting EDM 240. As you may or may not know, Early Day Motions (EDMs) are motions that Members of Parliament can submit, but the problem is that no fixed date is set for when, or even if, they will be debated. In reality, very few EDMs actually get debated, and most are used simply to draw attention to a topic or express an opinion. This makes EDMs quite ineffective in terms of driving real action or change. It is with that sense that EDMs cannot ā€˜disapproveā€™ statutory guidance, and I worry that the wording of Nadia Whittome MPā€™s EDM in that sense is quite misguiding. Another criticism of EDMs are the cost involved in printing and distributing them. On top of that, there are so many trivial EDMs that it often undermines the impact of more important ones. The sheer volume of these motions also means that those with genuine significance can easily get lost in the noise. As a result, EDMs do not constitute a change in legislation and are entirely at the discretion of individual MPs. I hope that this information is helpful.

Email from my local gym regarding their changing room policy for trans people. It states: Hi Lily, I've been sent your email from ---- who you were talking with the other day. After getting some advice on this, when you and the other students come in to use the centre you can use our gender-neutral changing rooms and toilets. Our general neutral changing rooms are our westside changing rooms as we have individual changing cubicles and showers and our general neutral toilets are our accessible toilets. That is still an assault. I am thankful that it was eggs rather than a knife, acid, bleach, etc. It is so scary right now to even leave the house. Every day, I am grateful to make to make it home safe. Brighton is not safe for queer people. Not anymore. There have been more and worse attacks than this in the last month, to my friends and trans siblings, I consider myself lucky. This is not a pity post. Its a fucking cry for help, this isn't okay, this has never been okay. If you aren't fighting for trans rights, vocally, loudly, proudly right now, you're contributing to this.
Thank you for taking the time to write to me about the Supreme Courtā€™s ruling on For Women Scotland Ltd v The Scottish Ministers. I strongly believe that everyone in the UK should be able to live with dignity and fulfil their potential, regardless of their sex or gender identity. I believe education plays a key role in creating a more inclusive society - one where people are treated with respect, and harmful misconceptions are challenged early on. I appreciate you sharing your personal experience so honestly. I understand that, as a transgender woman, this ruling and the uncertainty it has created at your university and in wider society will be unsettling. Iā€™m sorry to hear you and others have faced more open discrimination in recent days - no one should be made to feel unsafe or unwelcome. If this is the case, please do reach out to your University Wellbeing team. The Supreme Court has unanimously ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex, concluding that the ā€˜concept of sex is binary.ā€™ This comes after Nicola Sturgeonā€™s Scottish Government had argued that transgender people with a gender recognition certificate should be afforded the same sex-based protections as biological women. Intersex people are born with physical sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female bodies. Estimates of how many people this affects vary considerably, depending on the definitions used. Some clinical studies suggest that intersex traits that are apparent at birth, such as atypical genitalia, occur in around 1 in 4,500 to 1 in 300 births. Broader estimates - which include variations that may not be externally visible or apparent until later in life - suggest that up to 1.7% of the population may be affected. This wide range highlights the need for greater understanding about the nature and impact of intersex variations, both medically and socially. Greater awareness could indeed help reduce stigma, prevent harm, and support mā€¦
