This is so widely believed that people often leave out a bucket full of candy corn on Halloween night to attract one of these elementals.

Page 2 for the topsoil golem design. This shows off some more details of this creature. Text in image: The “teeth” of these golem are very hard and round, and they grow not just from the jaws but also on the tongue and roof of their mouths. This allows the golem to grind up practically anything they can get into their mouths, including invertebrates, plants, tree bark, and even rocks and bones or carcasses of other dead animals. They consume any and all earthly materials and detritus, and whatever nutrients they do not need are defecated back into the earth, seeding the soil with fine silt and nutrients. These golem are truly blind with no eye structures whatsoever. To “see” their way around, they have specialized whisker-like hairs that grow extra long all over their head and snout. Combined with a keen sense of smell, they are perfectly equipped to navigate their way underground. Know the difference between a molehill and a resting topsoil golem. Molehills will tend to be more lumpy and misshapen in appearance, while the backs of these golem are smoother and more conical in shape. If inspected closely you may also notice a slightly furry texture on the golem. If still in doubt, you can give the lump a tap with your foot before committing to a stomp. A golem’s back will be solid and won’t crumble like a molehill. Just be aware of any cultural taboos around disrupting a golem at rest. The golems may rest at the surface of the ground at different depths, which means the dirt imbedded in their fur along their back will settle and dry at different levels. This may give the hunchback a somewhat layered appearance.

Known for their distinctive hunchbacks and tendency to rest near the surface of the earth, they are often mistaken for molehills. Another common misconception is they are a species of mole, but these creatures are neither moles nor living molehills. Their status as elementals mean they are revered by many, and it is considered taboo to stomp on a molehill, in case it is actually a resting topsoil golem. However, these creatures can be quite destructive as they tend to churn up soil and eat anything they can get into their mouths. This causes friction between those who wish to respect these creatures, and those who want to protect their gardens. Their fur consists of dense, wiry, curly hair that is designed perfectly for capturing dirt. Over time, so much dirt, rock, tree bark, and other materials get captured by the fur that a thick mat forms a kind of shell around the body. This allows these golems to carry soil from one area to another and disperse nutrients, plant seeds, and other necessary materials for life. This enables them to play a critical role in moving soil and nutrients around as well as aerating the soil. They are key in keeping the earth healthy. The bulky bodies mean these creatures are not built for speed. Instead, they use their large paws and claws to plow through the earth. They are slow and tend to go through rather than around objects if possible, making them quite destructive backyard visitors.
