Evolution of spinescence in mimosoid legumes.
As leaves dry, equivalent water thickness (EWTcanopy) (as simulated at the canopy level by PROSAIL) decreases; however, the magnitude of these changes in EWTcanopy is modified or offset by changes in leaf angle distribution (termed structural drydown) that are expected to occur simultaneously, and this effect varies in magnitude and direction depending on leaf area index.

Conceptual model of photorespiration impacts from cellular to global scales. At the cellular level, photorespiration detoxifies 2-phosphoglycolate and integrates with the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle, carbon-concentrating mechanisms, and redox balancing, while producing glycolate that may be excreted. At the ecosystem level, released glycolate supports microbial communities and nutrient recycling, influencing carbon flow in aquatic environments. At the global level, these processes contribute to marine carbon cycling and potentially long-term oxygen and carbon balance.
