As you may be aware, early Saturday morning, our network was degraded for an extended period of time, resulting in a partial or complete loss of service for many of our customers. First and foremost, on behalf of the entire team, we want to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this caused to you and your business, and to let you know that we are taking the matter extremely seriously. As always, we will be completely transparent about what occurred and what we are doing to prevent it from happening again. We were the second major Australian digital service provider to be specifically targeted by the same group over the past two weeks, who have proven to have the ability to launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks against network operators that completely overwhelm conventional mitigation methods. For clarity and context, the size of the attack was estimated to be in excess of 600Gbps, with much of the traffic coming from compromised devices on Australian home NBN connections. Due to its sheer volume, two major telco providers, who we use for our data transit services, were taken completely offline, while saturating all of our own peering links. Note that during this attack, our entire team made themselves available and worked together to come up with solutions that ultimately brought this situation back under control. In eighteen years, we have never seen an attack of this size or scale, and whilst our existing capabilities have served us well for many years, this has now prompted us to completely rethink our mitigation strategy as it is clear the risk profile has changed. Whilst the immediate threat has been resolved, we have put temporary measures in place and have begun the process of engaging with vendors and providers to come up with a permanent solution that exceeds our needs to ensure that we have tools to mitigate these situations in the future. As always, we will keep you informed of these changes as they are implemented.

The Harkness Test is a meme image describing what you can ethically romance in fiction, be it in reference to video games, roleplaying games, fiction, fanfiction, or what have you. Not that this will stop the particularly depraved, and to some it's more of a statement of what is dull. The meme originates from a character named Captain Jack Harkness that first appeared on Doctor Who, later on as an important character on the spinoff Torchwood, before returning to Doctor Who. The character is a flirtatious pansexual action hero who regularly deals with exotic aliens and humans alike. The Test has three layers with an implied fourth. Is it sentient? Is it a person or an animal? Note that though the test is worded as 'sentient' that is a very low bar to clear: most animals and some plants are sentient, you are Sapient. It's a common mistake most sci-fi makes. Can they Communicate? Can you ask a question (do you want to bang?), and can they say yes? Are they "Mature" for their species? This is often phrased as 'sexual maturity', but for humans, that can still land you in hot water, since 'sexual maturity' does not exactly collaborate with 'acceptable age' in every culture, particularly if the gap is large, so be careful with this one. An implied fourth question is: Is it possible? Most AIs, for example, do pass tests one to three, but good luck sexing up a motherboard with your bio parts. Sentient creatures that externally spawn or have other weird reproduction or have other biological issues such as weird chemistries would also pose challenges to any would-be Command Shepard as well, for similar reasons.
