The real answer is that electricity usage is much higher during the day. Depending on season and location as much as 100% higher in the day. So the solar offsets the high usage times and drastically lowers prices. Add wind for all hours and a base of gas fired generators and it’s a robust SYSTEM.

. Firstly, solar power is active during PEAK DEMAND, exactly when it is needed! Secondly, wind power blows most of the time at 400' elevation where the turbine blades reside, thus that fills in the need at night. Solar and Wind make a great balance.

And batteries wear out. Solar has its place, but it has problems. Case in point, I started out with a solar charger horse fence that went out because things wear out. Horses got out. Now, I use no-climb horse fence and the solar charger is just for the electric ribbon at the top of the fence.

In 2019 we had 15 solar panels and a back up battery installed on our house, after getting it set up with the power company we cut our electric bill on half and what we don't use we sell back to the power company. We average about $50.00 a month, even with changing our electric car.

Normal batteries aren't very efficient, so what you want to do is what the Norwegians do and install a water battery. Basically use spare power to pump water up into a lake during the day, and overnight, let it come down and run some turbines. Much more efficient, and no rare earth metals required.
