Post from @soozuk.bsky.social: No, we weren't meant to believe Renee Zellwegger's Bridget Jones was fat. One of the character's main traits was that she believed she was fat due to the world she was living in. The book and film got this aspect right.

She has posh boomer parents. They're ALL riddles with EDs and think an ounce of extra fat is Sata. They've been on a diet since 1965. They pass it on to their kids. It's an extremely astute point. In the book she gets down to her target weight at one point and her friends all ask her if she's ill.
