UPDATE 11:00 AM: The new mayor is spending her first Monday in office taking on an issue puffed up by conservative pundits over the weekend after Seattle Police Officer Guild president Mike Solan said SPD has been directed to "not arrest offenders for open drug use in the City of Seattle" under the new administration. In the statement, Solan connects the claims of the new directive to the Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion (LEAD) program, the city's diversion effort shaped for moving people arrested for low-level drug, prostitution, or poverty-related offenses away from jail and prosecution, and connecting more offenders to support like housing, mental health care, and substance use treatment. Monday, Wilson said Solan is full of it. "There has been no policy change," a Wilson spokesperson tells CHS, providing a statement from Wilson strongly condemning the Solan statement. In the statement, Wilson says "enforcement of the possession and public use ordinance in priority situations" will continue while "the LEAD framework and other effective responses to neighborhood hot spots are implemented with an appropriate level of urgency, sufficient resources, and a commitment to results." "You'll know when I announce a policy change, because I'll announce a policy change," Wilson said.
