Natural gas requires significant water use, according to the Environmental and Energy Institute. “In 2022, 40% of all total U.S. annual water withdrawals, or about 48.5 trillion gallons, were made by coal and gas power plants,” an article from the Institute explains. “Of those 48.5 trillion gallons, 962 billion gallons of water were consumed and were no longer available for direct downstream use.”

Commissioners serve a 4 year term and they cannot serve more than two consecutive terms. The next election for the ACC is in 2026. 2 of the 5 seats will be up for reelection.

Tucson’s city council voted it down unanimously. But TEP and the developer, Beale Infrastructure, refuse to take no for an answer, making a deal that the ACC will vote on. At the same time, wants to roll back their clean energy goals so they can serve data centers with more coal and gas, AND raise rates to make customers subsidize them. Many of you have asked -- what's next?  Well, last week you heard Mayor Romero call for guardrails for large water users and data centers. This effort is currently in process, both at the city and county level.  This is great, but we want to be absolutely sure that experts are consulted, Tribal leaders from the Tohono O'odham and Pascua Yaqui Nations are consulted, and that the public has a chance to weigh in, too. Because that will take some time, we are calling for a moratorium in the consideration of data centers until these processes are complete. We're also calling for a totally transparent public process.
