“Oookkkkkk. But that’s bullshit.” The plastic bag crinkles as she pulls a set of stacked styrofoam boxes out of the bottom, several clear, round containers sat on top. Haphazardly, she spreads them across the kitchen counter, spilling an assortment of plastic utensils onto the granite besides them. “You love having an opinion. It’s like. Your favorite thing to have.” The corner of the room his attention had been locked on suddenly loses its appeal, his focus reigned in by her casual prodding in a way it hadn’t been in quite a while. It’s effortless, really, how easy it is for her to roll her eyes and make fun of him, despite everything in front of her. Half his body is sloughing off the bone, and she’s unloading a bag of takeout like she hadn’t noticed. “I don’t care as long as it’s edible,” he replies, feigning some stilted kind of rapport. “I’ve seen you pick food out of the trash.” “It was in a bag. I still don’t see the problem, I’d do it again.” “You could also just say you like to eat garbage.” “If it’s free, yeah, I’ll eat food out of the trash. Because I’m fru-gel.” Involuntarily, he snorts. It’s the kind of quick, out-the-nose exhale that becomes commonplace when expressing annoyance at a sibling, traditionally accompanied by a roll of the eyes; typical banter etiquette of two people raised under the same roof. “Frugal? Are you stupid?” “I might be!” It feels natural. Normal, some might even say. Maybe it’s just because he’s been entirely hollowed out on the inside, but two playfully earnest sentences exchanged with the person that probably knows him better than anyone else on this earth feels so staggeringly easy that it hurts. It hurts. When he smiles, when she laughs, when there’s a thirty-second interval in the unrelenting torrent of bullshit where it doesn’t feel like a gargantuan task to make a human connection with another person, it hurts more than the hundred stitches in his shoulder keeping his skin from peeling entirely off the muscle.

His human body had made its adjustments, keeping itself in check well enough to be a functioning member of society. No one minds a compulsion or two when you still go to work every day, after all. The problem is that his body isn’t human any more, is it? He used to be able to bear the weight of it all. Yes, that must be it. It’s this body’s fault. Looking at the loose scabs flaking off the palms of his hands—at the skin trying to peel itself off the tendons beneath—he desperately searches for something to blame. In the dim light of his bedroom, he thinks he finds it. There’s a rabid dog that lives in his bones and it’s his job to bring it to heel. He has to forget everything else, every other facet of his existence begging him to acknowledge that this didn’t start with the bite on his shoulder, that he can’t just chalk this up to one bad night a month. But he has to. There is something deeply, abysmally, tragically, catastrophically wrong with him but you don’t need to look at that! He doesn’t need to look at that! Everyone has something wrong with them, right? He’s not special. He’s just like everyone else. He can be just like everyone else. He just has to try harder.
