Australian White Ibis is predominantly white with a featherless black head, neck, and legs. Its bill is also black, long and downcurved. Ibis typically feed on invertebrates, including freshwater crayfish and crickets. Due to declines in the quality of their natural habitat, many ibis have unfortunately begun supplementing their diets from landfill sites, bins and litter in our cities and towns. This has led to them being given the common nicknames of “bin chickens” or “tip turkeys”.

The "Winter" statue in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens is a Carrara marble figure depicting a wizened old man with shrivelled limbs, stooping, and holding his robe tightly against the chill. The "Winter" statue was sculpted by the Italian artist Angelo Bertozzi in 1884 and shipped to Australia.

An emu stands tall to show how dominant he is. They can reach close to 2 metres tall, which is why an emu staring directly at you can feel oddly like being judged by a feathery dinosaur. Breeding takes place in May and June, and fighting among females for a mate is common. Females can mate several times and lay several clutches of eggs in one season. (One emu egg is near equivalent to 12 chicken eggs) The male does the incubation, (so this is why the female can lay several clutches) and during this process he hardly eats or drinks and loses a significant amount of weight. The eggs hatch after around eight weeks, and the young are nurtured and raised by their fathers.
