What do Chicagoans think about violent crime? We asked them! Violent crime in Chicago has decreased by about half since 2020. Despite this, many residents think it is increasing. Six in 10 Chicago adults are afraid to walk alone at night around their homes. Women report these concerns at higher rates than men. During the past year, 44% of Chicagoans believe violent crime has increased across the city. About a third say violent crime has increased in their own neighborhoods. Residents who see violent crime-related content on social media more frequently are also more likely to believe violent crime is increasing.
