As someone who was online back in the 90s I agree with the sentiment if not all the conclusions. Politeness and civil discourse aren't what I think of when I remember the early web. Flaming has been a thing since the beginning. What's changed is trying to communicate largely feels pointless now with the sheer volume of random people and bots combined with either ban-hammer crazy mods in some places or the seemingly total lack of moderation elsewhere. Also, I'm sorry, but as somebody who remembers the heydays of Napster, Limewire, and Kazza, it's amusing to hear we all just knew not to click on suspicious links. I'm a Millennial and used to get chain email forwards from classmates. I switched to Mac in the aughts because viruses were so common and finding a remover that wasn't a scam/malware was its own headache. We grew cautious because we had to. It's not a generational thing, it's niche vs general audience. I'll blame plenty on the Boomers but anybody coming from a popular app is more a victim than at fault. There's the concept of Aggregation Theory which posits that Facebook and similar apps are Aggregators rather than true Platforms. How they're structured and what they do are remarkably different.
