Long-term scientific records become most valuable with time. The Ocean Observatories Initiative was designed to create a continuous multi-decade record of how the oceans are changing. Interrupting that record after ten years means losing the ability to compare future observations against what was intended to become a 25-to-30-year baseline. Scientists warn the consequences could extend well beyond academic research. Ocean observations support weather forecasting, hurricane prediction, El Niño monitoring, fisheries management, and measurements of how much heat the oceans absorb from a warming atmosphere. Unlike satellites, which primarily observe the ocean surface, many of these instruments measure conditions deep below the water where critical climate processes occur.

According to local school officials, roughly two-thirds of students enrolled in the Salmon River district are Mohawk. Parents interviewed by NPR said they believe one of the boxes was installed in a classroom at the St. Regis Mohawk Elementary School, operated by the district. The small school is located on tribal land in nearby Akwesasne, NY. Herne described the practice as an echo of past abuses in government schools that ravaged Native communities. "For our children to be placed in boxes just as they would have been in residential schools, it was so heartbreaking and disgusting to me," she said. Native children across the U.S. were forced into federally-funded boarding and residential schools for more than a century, practice that ended in 1969. The U.S. government has acknowledged the system was repressive and violent, leading to the deaths of at least a thousand children.

There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this: Freedom is a pure idea. The statue at the corner of Main Street and College Avenue in Salem was erected on the Roanoke County Courthouse lawn in 1910. It was placed in honor of those who served in the Civil War, and it was funded by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Southern Cross Chapter 746. The 28-foot granite statue is of a private in the Confederate Army, and it represents all men from Roanoke County who fought. The soldier faces south (homeward) with his rifle at rest position. Investigators concluded that the district’s lack of internal controls in its accounting department allowed the shift of health care money. Andy Grice, who works for the district’s external auditor BerganKDV, told the investigators that without changes someone could restart the withholding at any time. By separating the three functions, multiple people are reviewing transactions, which prevents errors as well as improper use of district money. The district’s shorthanded finance staff have been improperly blending these duties, according to the external audits.

The former theory predicts that China, with its irreversible assent, would challenge US dominance by military force. In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future. But with the disappearance of that base, I now believe that the constitutional purpose has been served, and there is no longer a need for the process to be prolonged.
