Mayor's Statement on Trump Sanctuary City Orders Forty years ago, the City of Olympia first declared its desire to be a safe haven for the persecuted. At the time, the help was offered to Central Americans fleeing oppression and political violence in their home countries. We officially declared ourselves a Sanctuary City in 2016 and opened our arms intentionally wider to offer safety to all residents no matter their immigration status. And we did so once again in 2022 to offer refuge to women in need of reproductive health care. Part of offering sanctuary is a promise to protect those who cannot protect themselves from some onslaught bigger than them. We've learned that, in one of his first acts, President Trump has issued a warning and threat to cities like Olympia who have promised to give sanctuary. We don't know what these threats will mean or how they may play out. We do know we promised a place of shelter for our residents who face persecution. Olympia is a city of its word. It's cruel to strip vulnerable, oppressed people of protection and safety. We won't be cruel, and we can't allow the federal government to force us to act cruelly. When we are on the other side of this new administration, we will still need to be able to look in the mirror and see ourselves, in all our compassion and with all our principles intact.
