Text: TAHIRY BROOM was a brilliant, funny, vibrant, and confident Black woman. She was outgoing, resilient, and generous. She was 29 years old, transgender, and lived in Cleveland, Ohio. She loved Nicki Minaj and making people laugh. She had a family who loved her. She made a living doing sex work. On Feb 9th, 2025 a 28 year old man targeted 33 Black, cis & transgender sex workers by telephone for a date. He and Tahiry agreed to meet. They met outside his apartment where they had an argument and the man pulled out a gun and shot Tahiry in the right side of her head, ending her life.

In the 12 months ending with September 2024, 350 trans and gender diverse people were reported murdered. 94% were trans women; 93% were Black or Brown; 46% were sex workers.

This is the message from Elisa Rae Shupe, the first person to obtain a non-binary gender transition, to the Trump Administration:

Fuck You America! I don’t want your hatred.

I don’t want the military decorations & medals you awarded me. I don’t want your pension money for my distinguished military service & service-connected disabilities.

I don’t want your health care to treat the mental illnesses you caused. I don’t want more psychiatric ward commitments to keep me alive in a nation that I despise.

I don’t want to be buried in any of your state or national cemeteries for veterans and military retirees. I don’t want to be buried anywhere on US soil.

I don’t want any military honors or ceremonies to mark my death.

I don’t want my ashes to be stored on US soil.

I want my ashes or remains to be spread or buried in int’l waters.

I don’t want your flag anywhere near my body, remains, or ashes.

I don’t want any members of my family other than my spouse to be on the vessel that disposes of my ashes or remains.

My death is not a surrender.

My death as a member of the 3rd gender and transgender population does not mean you won. It solely marks the end of our association.

You are not the land of the free.

You are not a country getting made great again.

Too much demonstrated hatred throughout your existence extinguishes any claim to previous greatness.

The white man decimated and massacred the indigenous populations of the 3rd gender on the lands now called USA. It was only fitting that a white person restored it.

You cannot erase non-binary and transgender people because you give birth to more of us each day.

The person shot and killed by Surrey RCMP on February 9, has been identified as a 15-year-old neurodiverse boy called Chase. Family members report that the young student was on the autism spectrum.

RCMP killed him after responding to calls regarding a person with a weapon at an elementary school near 70 Avenue and 185 Street. At some point police fired a weapon, or weapons, killing the person.

The IIO has not released information about the victim, but friends and neighbors of the victim’s family have come forward. Surrey Schools released a statement confirming that a student from the Clayton Heights Secondary School community had died over the weekend.

Jason Jenkins, who identified himself as Chase’s uncle, called out police actions, saying, “This just comes as a total shock, and I’m angry. I want to know why there are so many police officers and (they) use deadly force. But instead they just decided to shoot him. And I don’t, I just can’t wrap my head around it.”

A family spokesperson told media that Chase did not own a real gun and was not suicidal. He did own a pellet gun. Family say that Chase “left their Surrey home Sunday afternoon to walk around the neighbourhood, as he often did, sometimes to leave goodie bags for younger children who live nearby.” RCMP were reportedly called only half-an-hour later. Loved ones say that because Chase was on the spectrum, “he likely did not understand how serious the situation was when officers arrived.”

CTV News reports a security video in which Chase is seen walking across a snow-covered lawn holding something to his head. Four police follow him with guns drawn, taking cover around a parked police vehicle on the road. One officer says to him, “Put the gun down” and “You don’t want to do this.” Two shots are heard in quick succession after Chase had backed away and was obscured from view behind a tree.
