You can also solve the problem with the bevel modifier (1), but keep in mind that it solves this problem with N-gons (2), which Subsurf turns into quads around a 5-star. (3)

The structure of Bevel's geometry after Subsurf involves maybe more nubs and 5-stars than you want. It's hard to identify the single intended extension point.
