Double LP version. Wewantsounds reissues Brigitte Fontaine's landmark 1970 Saravah album Comme à la Radio, recorded with Areski Belkacem, Wadada Leo Smith, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. This new edition pairs the original album with rare bonus material. The release is accompanied by a lavish 24-page bilingual booklet featuring an introduction by journalist Andy Beta, essays by Wadada Leo Smith, Brigitte Fontaine biographer Benoît Mouchart, and Benjamin Barouh, plus a recent interview with Brigitte Fontaine and the late Areski Belkacem. The booklet also includes complete lyrics and a selection of rare archival photographs by Jean-Pierre Leloir and Philippe Gras. Comme à la Radio was originally released in 1970 on Pierre Barouh's cult Saravah label, fusing Fontaine's radical lyricism with Areski Belkacem's minimalist compositions and the fearless improvisations of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Wadada Leo Smith. Its title track has since become a cult classic in jazz and groove circles. The album has been newly remastered from the original tapes and is reissued featuring 11 bonus tracks. The original album is presented in restored clarity, while the bonus tracks gather rare non-album singles, English-language takes, alternate versions and previously unreleased instrumental recordings showcasing the Art Ensemble's artistry, including the elusive English version of Comme à la Radio, and a striking early version of "L'été L'été." Comme à la Radio stands as a visionary landmark of French music and a defining statement in Brigitte Fontaine's career. This expanded edition confirms its enduring influence more than fifty years after its original release. Habibi Funk’s new sister label Audible Beauty Records debut release: We originally came across Soliao's music after visiting Malaysia and Indonesia as part of some DJ gigs for Habibi Funk and were immediately head over heels with the music. A landmark collection retelling the untold story of Malaysian jazz featuring 11 songs from the legendary composer, arranger and pianist Alfonso Soliano, originally recorded for Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) and only released in a run of a few dozen copies for radio broadcast. Widely regarded as one of the foundational figures of Malaysian music, Soliano blended jazz, Latin influences and traditional Malay musical forms into a uniquely local sound of all original compositions. The recordings also feature contributions from some of Malaysia’s most important musicians and composers of the era, including Johari Salleh and Ahmad Nawab. For fans of Salah Ragab, Ahmed Malek, Mulatu Astatke, Dollar Brand and co. The release includes extensive liner notes and previously unpublished archival photographs documenting Soliano’s life and legacy. Includes a special gatefold LP with a 12-page booklet attached to the sleeve and featuring in-depth essays, archival photography and historical material. Fully licensed from the Soliano family.
A successful young songwriter in 1960s becomes derailed by LSD and resulting madness. Craig Smith was a 1960s golden boy – good looking, charismatic, outgoing; a preternaturally gifted musician and songwriter whose songs were recorded by some of the biggest names in entertainment – Andy Williams, Glen Campbell, the Monkees. His future success seemed assured, until an unexpected turn of events plunged him into a terrifying darkness. Clean-cut Craig Smith became Maitreya Kali, the self-proclaimed psychedelic Messiah. He laid out his poignant, disturbing schizophrenic vision on a sprawling self-released double-album before disappearing completely. Author Mike Stax spent fifteen years piecing together the mystery of Maitreya Kali, uncovering one of the strangest and most tragic untold stories of the 1960s and ‘70s. Swim Through the Darkness reveals author Stax's fifteen year quest in tracking down this strange saga of American pop culture. Included in the story are Smith's close ties to the Monkees, particularly Mike Nesmith, who produced and promoted Smith's band, Penny Arkade. Also covered are the bizarre self-released albums he made as Maitreya Kali, which now command thousands of dollars among psychedelic music collectors.

Two or three minutes' inha- lation will dry a running coryza and snuffles, open the passage in a nose stopped by swollen turbinates, soothe and heal the irritation of a "raw" mucous membrane, and allay the tend- ency to hay fever. This inhalation, deeply drawn into the lungs, is helpful in stimulating expectoration in bronchitis and drying the secretion, and assists the radical cure of all the curable forms. In phthisis it is also useful as an aid in lessening the cough and drying and eliminating the secretion. In cases of chronic nasal catarrh with fetid odor, first cleanse out the mucus by snuffing up a mild and warm salt solution just before inhaling the ozone. Read all that is said of ozone in this book. It is a very important adjunct to high frequency currents. In acute conditions repeat at short intervals.

Ascension (Edition I & II) Verve Vault Series 2LP Ascension, released in 1966 on Impulse! Records, stands as one of John Coltrane’s most radical and influential works. Subtitled “Edition I & II” to reflect the two complete takes recorded at the session—and presented together on LP for the first time—the piece is a nearly 40-minute large-ensemble performance marking Coltrane’s decisive embrace of the avant-garde. Recorded on June 28, 1965, at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio and produced by Bob Thiele, the session assembled an expanded ensemble of eleven musicians. Alongside Coltrane’s tenor saxophone are trumpeters Freddie Hubbard and Dewey Johnson; saxophonists Pharoah Sanders, Marion Brown, John Tchicai, and Archie Shepp; pianist McCoy Tyner; bassists Art Davis and Jimmy Garrison; and drummer Elvin Jones. The music alternates between densely textured collective improvisation and extended solo statements, conjuring a hurricane of violent, searching sound. Initially controversial for its intensity and freedom, Ascension has since come to be recognized as a landmark of modern jazz and a defining statement of the emerging free-jazz movement. Presenting both takes together highlights the organic, ever-changing character of the performance and affirms its enduring place in Coltrane’s artistic legacy. The Verve Vault series is always mastered from analog tapes and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.

The quartet’s (Jason Nazary, Ryan Easter, Elias Stemeseder, Lester St. Louis) third album, Live at Nublu, was issued in June on Out Of Your Head Records. Wrens members Nazary and Easter joined OoD host David Mittleman for an interview about the sinister band, taxi cabs, ornithology and jazz in academia. Sat. Aug 22nd, 7pm - 10pm: Speaker Music: DeForrest Brown Jr. Interview In July Speaker Music, aka DeForrest Brown Jr, releases “Synoptic Audio,” his fourth LP for record label Planet Mu. “Synoptic Audio” is Brown’s final album as Speaker Music; it features his signature style of theory based electronic free jazz drums and synthesized brass horn lines. OoD and Brown discuss his youth in Birmingham, Alabama, experimental electronic music production and the ending of his Speaker Music project.
