The Signor-Lipps effect is often applied specifically to cases of the youngest-known fossils of a taxon failing to represent the last appearance of an organism. The inverse, regarding the oldest-known fossils failing to represent the first appearance of a taxon, is alternatively called the Jaanusson effect after researcher Valdar Jaanusson, or the Sppil-Rongis effect (Signor-Lipps spelled backwards). the higher they climb the louder the wail seems to get. the wail seems to be drifting down from the distant sky.
the person rests sleeplessly under the stars, lounging on a curled slumbering Lorca. a dying fire flickers thru the door of their shelter. they are putting the finishing touches on their latticework hat.
Lorca the duocorn comes galloping towards the person, her mane and long hairless tail whipping gracefully in the wind.
the person carries the saddle up a hill through the trees.

the person pulls aside the draped fronds covering the entrance of their cabin
the person's cabin
the person slips it on, flexing their arm to test its flexibility. it throbs with strength
it shimmers at the person, watching the creature thoughtfully.
they arrive at the cat-thing, the insectoid is already there, burning it
the person runs back to their cabin as fast as they can
the person hears a chilling laughter behind them and looks back. the cat-thing is young, practically a kitten, strange noises drifting out from somewhere inside it
one hand around the cat's throat, the beast makes a lethally close swipe at the person's eyes. the person swings their other arm up and clamps both hands around its neck
they look back over their shoulder to see a wild cat-like creature barreling towards them, frothing at the mouth and with a large portion of it's head and neck missing, sunken inwards and bloodily mycelial. it pounces on top of the person, their arms barely keeping the its claws and fangs at bay. the two roll into a tree, the person still struggling underneath.
they begin weaving pieces from the bundle into their hat.
the person picks up the incomplete frame of a woven hat. they place it on their head as they walk back into the woods.
a giant insectoid is looming across the fire.
the treehopper's carcass is butchered, head and guts and wet bones lying next to a fresh fire. a spit of giblets is propped above the flame, back in front of the person's cabin.
getting partially dressed, they string their bow and pick up a pair of arrows without points
the forest is bright, dewdrops like diamonds. the person emerges in a misty exhale clouding the excited morning air.
the person jolts awake, drenched in sweat under their animal skins.
faster. faster. the stars bleeding into the night.
the sun becomes larger and larger, the person lost among the loops of solar projections
a massive wave moves in from the horizon. "But you're really not curious? Not even a little?" it crashes
open air, clear sky, birds flying into the sun "Honestly... I think she just likes me?"
darkness. "Have you always been interested in it?"
