Harmful algal blooms occur when algae multiply rapidly, depleting oxygen in the water and releasing toxins. This can suffocate fish, kill marine mammals and birds, and devastate local ecosystems. The 2025 South Australia event became the country’s longest and deadliest on record. 2/2
