Such rapid declines disrupt marine food webs, alter ocean circulation, and accelerate climate feedbacks. Unfortunately, March 2025 wasn't something that came out of the blue. Both 2023 and 2024 saw extremely low sea ice extents.
Issue 9 of the @copernicusmarine.bsky.social Ocean State Report reveals that winter ice loss in the Arctic reached an area equivalent to six times the size of Poland (Poland is around 313,000 square kilometres).
