The AWS outage has impacted some of our users since last night, disrupting their sleep. That is not the experience we want to provide and I want to apologize for it. We are taking two main actions: 1) We are restoring all the features as AWS comes back. All devices are currently working, with some experiencing data processing delays. 2) We are currently outage-proofing your Pod experience and we will be working tonight-24/7 until that is done. There was one other detail in the announcement post that caught my eye: Website owners can also add ARIA tags to improve how ChatGPT agent works for their websites in Atlas. Which links to this: ChatGPT Atlas uses ARIA tags---the same labels and roles that support screen readers---to interpret page structure and interactive elements. To improve compatibility, follow WAI-ARIA best practices by adding descriptive roles, labels, and states to interactive elements like buttons, menus, and forms. This helps ChatGPT recognize what each element does and interact with your site more accurately. A neat reminder that Al "agents" share many of the characteristics of assistive technologies, and benefit from the same affordances.

Definition: Slack. The absence of binding constraints on behavior. Poor is the person without Slack. Lack of Slack compounds and traps. Slack means margin for error. You can relax. Slack allows pursuing opportunities. You can explore. You can trade. Slack prevents desperation. You can avoid bad trades and wait for better spots. You can be efficient. Slack permits planning for the long term. You can invest. Slack enables doing things for your own amusement. You can play games. You can have fun. Slack enables doing the right thing. Stand by your friends. Reward the worthy. Punish the wicked. You can have a code. Slack presents things as they are without concern for how things look or what others think. You can be honest. You can do some of these things, and choose not to do others. Because you don’t have to. Only with slack can one be a righteous dude. Slack is life.
A common tragic example is women who set height filters of 6’0” and up on apps. Only 15% of American men are 6’0” or taller. On an app with height filters, each of them has 3-4 times as many women to choose from as a guy of average height, and they’re not particularly impressed by the fact that a girl cares about height so much. The woman’s effective dating pool is limited to 5% of what it was. A height-agnostic woman picking from a pool of 20 men could select based on looks, intelligence, devotion, industriousness, sociability, skill in bed… But only 1 of those 20 is both over 6’ and has her as his first choice. Setting a height filter spends 4-5 bits, close to a girl’s entire budget after filtering A/S/L. It gets her a guy who’s tall and nothing else.
