The first Freedom Ride on April 9, 1947 was called “Journey of Reconciliation” meant to challenge segregation laws on interstate buses. Bayard Rustin was an early organizer.

The Freedom Rider protest that was a direct result of The Greensboro Four protest started ed May 4, 1961 and continued for almost a year. The Black American Youth were feeling inspired by their elders, and empowered by their peers. Nearly 500 people took those 60, separate Freedom Riders.
