In the Hitchcock film, the stereotypical or imaginary frame is clearly some phantasmic United States, about which one might argue that the open-field sequence sets the Midwest in place, while the mountainous landscape of North Dakota does double duty for the Rockies (and the non-specific popular accent of the minor characters might also open up a space for the South). Yet here too, as in Chandler, the completeness of the enumerated elements (of such a map-phantasm) is not enough: we must also come to the ultimate edge of all this, in order for it to recohere retroactively as a satisfyingly exhaustive itinerary.

There is a sentence of Hölderlin's that fell out of a book of fragments of his that I read once and then I couldn't find the book again. A sentence using the verb "to swim" in the passive voice, as in: Mein Herz ist schwimmt in Zeit. My heart is swimmed in time. This sentence seems to me an example of accuracy.

A few years ago I attended an interview in which John Ashbery was present technologically due to being almost 90 years old and tired. The interviewers were a little afraid of him. Two interviewers. Groping for a way to engage a conversation. One mentioned a book she claimed John Ashbery had written entitled Light. Ash-bery denied this. She insisted. She had the book at home on her bookshelf. Ultimately they decided it was an issue of ARTnews magazine on this theme. "So, John, can you say something about that?" asked the other interviewer, to which Ashbery after a long pause replied, "Light. What would we do without it?"
