I wanted to follow it up now that, a year on, the EHRC’s draft Code of Practice has emerged. My broader point was that Labour voters are noticing the incompatibility between manifesto promises and actions in power. I appreciated your response last year, but felt that you focussed on trying to spin that original EHRC guidance as being the opposite of how LGBTQIA+ charities from the monolithic national ones like Stonewall through to small locals like Hexham Pride see it. I do appreciate the Government’s work curbing the harm and exclusion the early draft would have caused, but still the Code of Practice as it stands represents a rolling back of rights that affects everybody. Your letter resigning as Wes Streeting’s ministerial aide says “It is in the best interests of the country and the party that the Prime Minister sets out a swift timetable to ensure that a new leader is in place to regain the confidence of the public and to ensure that the government can deliver on the commitments it has made.” And so I am hopeful this Government under its current (and future) leaders will take steps like amending the 2010 Equalities Act to clarify that its definition of gender was trans-inclusive, or instructing the EHRC to provide a new Code of Practice that won’t lead to the “…exclusion of trans people from services and facilities that they have used without issue for a very long time”, as your colleague Nadia Whittome accurately puts it.
