it heavily depends on the mood i want to go for. i have few favorites, like bright orange and hot pink which tend to make the end image look very warm and glowing. i leave a lot of underpaint showing on the end image usually so its also a consideration which color i want to see peeking out on the edges of light and dark, what i feel would work the best with subject matter usually picking a brighter more saturated hue of one of the main colors in the subject matter also works nicely, the magenta tone i used here is just the drape behind the vase but brighter. theoretically u can pick any color for the underpaint, (some are just subjectively easier to work with) it just depends on how u want ur lighting to feel in the end.
