Expanding on the emergency vet situation, and why Jules and I are asking for your help: After being sick for a couple of days, EB1 (Shrimp) crashed. We were fearful it was a blockage/obstruction because of his symptoms, so we had no choice but to take him to the emergency vet. I was out of town while this was happening at 3 AM. Wanting to know options, Jules called ahead to talk to the nurses to see what could be done and was met by a vet who told him plainly we could pay the $1200 fee, or they would put EB1 down for free if he brought him in—they don't take surrenders, or "do charity work." We didn't have the money. We still don't. We had to have a very difficult talk about what we could do realistically. This is the hardest part of being a pet owner, circumstances can change after adoption: we could have handled this emergency no problem 3 years ago, but this year, it's crushing us. I made the call that if his treatment was more than $2000, we couldn't do it. We couldn’t completely destabilize our household for the cat, even though we both love him like he's our own kid.
