Are we about to lose the Portobello Elephants from the prom? Anyone know their history? Looks like 1950s design to me. @threadinburgh.scot ? #Edinburgh?

Gone! They were cutting into the stairwell just before lunch today. Hoped they might only make it as far as the tiled wall by the end of the day, and leave it exposed, but when I came back late afternoon, the wall had gone and the elephant with it.
I get a Festival of Britain vibe.
