International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia 17th May #IDAHOBIT The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, or IDAHOBIT, takes place on the 17th May with the date specifically chosen to commemorate the World Health Organization's decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. Originally known as the International Day Against Homophobia when first celebrated in 2005, it expanded to cover transphobia in 2009 and biphobia in 2015. The day serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the treatment of LGBTQ+ people worldwide, including the ongoing repression and discrimination, as well as a chance to come together to drive positive change going forward. outmaking.games
Following Barclays recent changes to their treatment of trans women, Out Making Games have withdrawn our support from the Barclays Games Frenzy 2025 event, and will no longer be taking part as guest panellists. With Ukie’s 2022 census finding 24% of the UK games industry identify as something other than heterosexual, and 4% have a gender that is not the same as that assigned at birth, the importance of inclusion is particularly crucial in a business which supports the gaming community and runs gaming events which will naturally attract games professionals and players from all aspects of the community. Inclusion and intersectionality have been key pillars of OMG’s work since our formation. We have worked with numerous corporations, studios, publishers and charities over the years, to successfully promote the importance of equality and fairness to any business. It’s what we, our partners, and our sponsors stand for. Whilst we are grateful for Barclay’s support of OMG in the past, this current action is a step backwards and OMG is, and will always be, supportive of the trans, non-binary, and gender diverse members of our community.
Lesbian Visibility Week 21st April - 27th April Lesbian Visibility Week is a week to empower and support lesbians. During this week we celebrate the lives and accomplishments of the lesbian community. Lesbian Visibility Week provides a forum for lesbian views to be heard, builds a sense of community, and creates solidarity among the lesbian community. One of OMG’s pillars has always been intersectionality. We support you, however you identify in regard to gender. Today and always, we ask you to remember that whenever you are speaking about others in terms of gender or sexual orientation, you speak with the kindness and civility you’d wish for yourself and your friends. After all, you are speaking about fellow human beings who have rights too. Don’t get caught up in sensationalist reporting or storytelling. Check your facts using a reputable source like the BBC, relevant charities or organisations, not social media or certain other headline-grabbing press outlets. LGBT+ History Month - Schools Out
Dear Meta, The recent changes to Meta’s content moderation policies put at least 9% of adults around the world at risk. We are Out Making Games (“OMG”), a network of hundreds of LGBTQ+ games professionals, representing millions of LGBTQ+ gamers and individuals around the world. We are writing to express serious concerns about the recent changes to Meta’s content moderation policies and their potential implications for online safety and inclusion for millions around the world. A global survey in 2023 found nearly 1 in 10 adults across 30 countries identify as LGBTQ+. Many will be customers of Meta via Facebook, Instagram, Threads, or the Oculus VR gaming platform and will be put at risk by Meta’s decision to reduce certain automated content filtering mechanisms. Social media platforms serve as crucial spaces for connection, support, and identity expression for many LGBTQ+ individuals, especially those in areas with limited in-person community resources. While potentially aimed at promoting broader dialogue, the changes risk creating an environment where harmful speech can proliferate more easily, and compromising these vital digital spaces.
Like many other groups, we have watched with shock, if unfortunately not surprise, as the 47th US president starts their term by rolling back diversity and inclusion, and targeting the trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming members of our community. While we are a UK-based organisation, we have colleagues, friends and family who will be directly impacted, and seen in conjunction with changes recently announced on removing fact-checking and the dismantling of the Hateful Conduct policy at Meta, this is an unnerving time to be part of the global LGBTQ+ community. We also know however that we will keep working to make the UK Games Industry a more inclusive and diverse place to work. To all the trans, non-binary and gender non-confirming members of our network - you are seen, you are valid, and you will *always* have a place here with OMG. For anyone who is in need of support at this time, the resources in this post may be of use.
