Given Mr. Trump’s unpopularity and Democrats’ generic ballot lead, Dr. El-Sayed could carry Michigan in November. A useful way to de-escalate factional tensions would be for people like Mr. Sanders to acknowledge that the bar for proving their case that leftists can teach Democrats how to win is higher than narrowly winning in a favorable cycle. Can he beat Ms. Slotkin’s performance by the eight points suggested by the national swing? Can he outperform Roy Cooper and Mary Peltola by amounts that account for Michigan’s bluer partisan lean than North Carolina or Alaska? It’s fair to have a debate about the best direction of the party, but that debate should be conducted on honest terms.

A similar dynamic has played out in Republican primaries for years on end. Conservatives have lost winnable Senate races because hard-right candidates such as Herschel Walker, Kari Lake, and Todd Akin won their primaries by emphasizing positions that appealed to most of their party’s voters but repelled a majority of the electorate. Political consultants use the term wedge issues for positions that separate a candidate’s views from those of a majority of voters. But in primaries, the wedge can work the opposite way: It can discredit a broadly popular stance in favor of a narrowly base-pleasing one. El-Sayed does not endorse socialism, but he does support abolishing ICE, providing health insurance for undocumented immigrants who pay taxes, and making private health insurance “redundant and unnecessary.”

If this newer order completely vanquishes the older marital ideal, then gay marriage will become not only acceptable but morally necessary. The lifelong commitment of a gay couple is more impressive than the serial monogamy of straights. And a culture in which weddings are optional celebrations of romantic love, only tangentially connected to procreation, has no business discriminating against the love of homosexuals. But if we just accept this shift, we’re giving up on one of the great ideas of Western civilization: the celebration of lifelong heterosexual monogamy as a unique and indispensable estate. That ideal is still worth honoring, and still worth striving to preserve. And preserving it ultimately requires some public acknowledgment that heterosexual unions and gay relationships are different: similar in emotional commitment, but distinct both in their challenges and their potential fruit.

Al Sharpton condemn a series of “knockout” attacks that have occurred in several cities. Sharpton condemned the attacks in a speech on Saturday, but Fox has so far failed to report on the condemnation. The so-called "knockout game" involves young men attacking random people on the street. The violent, unprovoked attacks have sometimes resulted in death. Fox News has intensely covered these attacks, reporting on them largely as racially motivated crime committed by black youths against white victims. At a meeting of his National Action Network on Saturday, civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton decried the attacks as “deplorable” and said they “must be condemned by all us.” Sharpton went even further, as the New York Post reported:
