USS Recruit is a dummy training ship 2/3 the size of a Dealey-class destroyer escort. It was used for basic seamanship training for fifty years, from 1949-1989, while Naval Training Center San Diego was still active and was kept as a museum when the area was converted to commercial and residential spaces after the base was largely closed in the 90’s. Nearby is the Point Loma Annex, a clinic, and military housing, all that remains of a base that once hosted up to 100,000 people at a time in various forms of service or training.

USS San Diego (CL-53) was an Atlanta-class light cruiser of the U.S. Navy that served in the Pacific Theater from January 1942 until it was decommissioned a year after the end of the Second World War. The ship earned 18 battle stars, and is second only to USS Enterprise (CV-6) on the list of most decorated ships of the war. She was the first major combatant into Tokyo Bay. The monument as shown here includes the crew list, and a chart of the ship's movements over a map of the Pacific. A beautiful monument!
USS Amberjack Monument st the 52 Boats Memorial in Liberty Station, San Diego. Flowers and a small print out are left in honor of TM3 Runkowski, who died when the ship was lost on the 16th of February 1943.
